When I was tasked with writing a Super Bowl spot for Maserati I knew I wanted to suggest something different from any of the other Maserati commercials I had seen. A lot of them, and car ads in general, had some form of a beautiful, female, model driving 100 MPH through some desert and wearing heels while doing it. I began to think about ways you could have a female hero but also subvert the history of car commercials that sexualized women and their bodies. At the same time I had a child in 3rd grade who was being bullied for the first time in his life. How do we push back against bullies? These were the two thoughts that began reaching toward one another when I began to write. I knew, and it was actually true, that Maserati felt like an underdog in the fancy sports car world of American's obsessions with Porsche and Lamborghini. All of this led to me writing for an imaginary hero, a young girl, teaching us how to fight the bullies and giants in our lives.
